Setting Google Chrome and Gmail as Your Default Email Handler

Your default mail handler is the email program that automatically opens when you click on an email link on a webpage or within an email message. By following the steps below, you can set Google Chrome and Gmail as your default mail handler.

Step 1. Change the Default Email Program in Windows

  1. From the Start menu, click the Settings Gear (⚙️).

  2. Select Apps.

  3. Click on Default Apps.

  4. Locate the Email entry and click on the currently listed email app.

  5. From the options, select Google Chrome.

 

Step 2. Change the MAILTO Protocol Default

  1. From the Start menu, click the Settings Gear (⚙️).

  2. Select Apps.

  3. Click on Default Apps.

  4. Scroll to the bottom of the list and click Choose default apps by protocol.

  5. In the list on the left, find the MAILTO protocol.

  6. Click on the currently listed app next to MAILTO and select Google Chrome.

 

Step 3. Allow Site Handling in Google Chrome

  1. Open the Google Chrome browser on your computer.

  2. Ensure you are signed into your Lane Google account.

  3. Click the three dots (⋮) Chrome menu icon located in the top right corner of your browser.

  4. Click Settings.

  5. Click on Privacy and security.

  6. Click on Site Settings.

  7. Scroll down and click on the additional permissions dropdown menu.

  8. Click the Protocol handlers menu.

  9. Make sure the option Sites can ask to handle protocols has a blue dot indicating it's enabled.

Step 4. Set the Gmail Site to Handle the Email Protocol

  1. Navigate to your school's Gmail using the Chrome browser.

  2. On the top right of your address bar, you may see a double diamond icon (♦♦).

  3. Click the double diamond icon and select Allow Gmail (mail.google.com) to open all email links. Then click Done.

  4. If the double diamond icon is not visible, Gmail might already have the necessary permission. To check:

    • Click the three dots (⋮) Chrome menu icon > Settings > Privacy and Security > Site Settings > Additional Permissions > Protocol handlers.

    • Verify that mail.google.com is listed and set as the default for the email protocol.
