Overview
If you are receiving sign-in prompts on the wrong device, or want to change how you verify your login, this guide explains how to manage your Google 2-Step Verification (MFA) settings.
Why You May Receive Prompts on Different Devices
Google Prompt sends notifications to any device where your Google account is signed in.
This means:
- A home computer, tablet, or old device may receive prompts
- Multiple devices may receive the same prompt
Understanding Your Verification Options
You may have more than one method available when signing in:
Google Prompt
- Sends a push notification to signed-in devices
- You approve the login on that device
- May go to multiple devices
Authenticator App
- Generates a code on your phone
- Only available on the device where the app is installed
- Works without internet access
Text Message (SMS)
- Sends a code to your phone number
- Useful if you do not have access to other devices
Backup Codes
- One-time use codes
- Used if you cannot access your phone or other methods
How to Remove a Device from Receiving Google Prompts
If prompts are going to a device you do not want to use:
- Go to: https://myaccount.google.com/security
- Click Your devices
- Select Manage all devices
- Choose the device
- Click Sign out
This will stop that device from receiving Google Prompt notifications.
Note:
If you sign back into that device later, it may begin receiving prompts again.
How to Change Your Verification Methods
To review or update your available options:
- Go to: https://myaccount.google.com/security
- Click 2-Step Verification
- You will see your current methods listed
- Add, remove, or update methods as needed
How to Use a Different Verification Method When Signing In
If a prompt is sent to a device you do not have access to:
- On the sign-in screen, click Try another way or Choose another option
- Select a different method, such as:
- Authenticator app code
- Text message (SMS)
- Backup code
Follow the instructions to complete sign-in.
Recommended Setup
For the most reliable experience:
- Use your phone (Authenticator app or text message) as your primary method
- Keep at least one backup method available
- Remove devices you no longer use
Key Reminder
Your verification methods are tied to your Google account, not a single device.
Any device signed into your account may receive prompts unless it is removed.
