Converting PDFs to Word Documents

If you have a copy of MS Office 2016 or Word 2016, you can open up a PDF with it and it will convert the PDF to a Word Document.

To do this:

  1. Open Microsoft Word 2016.

  2. Click Open Other Documents.

  3. Click on Browse.

  4. Make sure All Files is selected from the drop down box.

  5. You can then select the PDF that you want to open and then click Open.

  6. You will then be prompted with this message.

  7. Click OK and your PDF will be converted and made into a Word document.
Reminder: as a student at LCC you are eligible for a free copy of MS Office 365. You can learn about accessing it here.

If you need to edit a PDF, the computers in the Library have Adobe Acrobat DC installed which will allow you to edit a PDF.

For faculty:

Once a document is converted to a PDF, it is generally not editable, but make sure your students know about being able to get MS office for free and Word can convert it for them. The ATC may be able to convert it for you, using Acrobat Pro. You can send it to them to try or you can use one of the ATC computers which have Acrobat Pro installed on them.

Here are the most commonly used options if receiving PDF's is an issue:
  1. Accept only online text, remind students to either work offline or save often.
  2. If you KNOW that all students have some version of MS Word, you can also specify WORD 97 - 2003, which would be the least common denominator.
  3. Require all documents to be submitted as Google docs.
  4. Specify .RTF format, so that students can save to that format from any word processor.

If you are interested in getting the software you need to contact the IT Help Desk at x4444 or email helpdesk@lanecc.edu to see what your options are.

Reminder: as a staff/faculty member at LCC you are eligible for a free copy of MS Office 365. You can learn about accessing it here.
