Changing File Types

How to Change the File Type of Different Documents and Images


Windows

To change the file type of an image:

  • Download the image from the Internet or transfer it from another device.
  • Locate the image and right-click it. Select Open with > Paint

  • Once Paint has opened the image, click the blue drop-down menu in the top left corner of the screen. Select Save as
  • At the bottom of the resulting window, click the drop-down menu next to Save as type: and select the desired file type.

  • Click Save in the bottom right corner of the window.
To change the file type of a document:
  • Download the document from the Internet or transfer it from another device.
  • Locate the document and open it in the appropriate software. If you are trying to change the file type of a Word document, open it in Microsoft Word.
  • Once the file is uploaded, click File and then Save As

  • When prompted to choose a location, select where you would like to save the file.
  • Once the download window opens, click the drop-down menu next to Save as type and select the desired file type.


  • Click Save in the bottom right corner of the window.

Mac OS

To change the file type of an image:

  • Download the image from the Internet or transfer it from another device.
  • Open the image in Preview.
  • Go to File and click on Export...

  • Select the desired file type in the drop-down menu as shown below. You can also change the file's name and its location.

  • Click Save in the bottom right corner.
To change the file type of a document in Pages:

Google Docs, Slides, and Sheets
  • Log into Google and open the document you would like to convert.
  • Click File in the top left corner, just below the document's title.
  • Go to Download as

  • Select the file type you would like to save the document as.

  • This will download the document onto the computer. The new document can then be found in your Downloads folder.
To change file types in Google Sheets or Google Slides, follow the same steps as above (File > Download as).
