What's New: A Guide to the Moodle Boost Theme
What is Boost
With the default theme for courses changing from Clean in the next Moodle update for Lane Community College we will be integrating Boost theme in all of our online courses as the new default. This theme makes editing easier and more convenient. Also increasing accessibility, it is more mobile friendly with the Moodle app, improves navigation, making courses more ADA compliant.
Here is a list of where common menus and buttons got move to with the transition from Clean and to the new Boost theme:
There is no longer an administration block. It has been replaced by a gear in the upper right-hand corner. The administration block/tab is now a gear or wheel icon located at the top right section on your course main page to the right of where the name of your course is displayed. In this drop down menu you can access grader report along with some others that use to be in the old administration block.
Users, Reports, Question Bank
At the bottom of the drop down menu, select More. This will take you to your Course administration page. This includes users and reports(tabs near the top), Import and restore, Question bank and category editing, and other items that were once in the administration block/tab.
Note: For unknown reasons "Reports" may appear as a tab.
In the upper left-hand corner of the course there is a button with three horizontal bars. Click this to show or hide your navigation menu.
Return Home/Lane Logo
This is at the top left corner still but is on a light blue rectangular button. This takes you back to the LaneOnline home page.
Turn Editing on
This is no longer at the top right it is listed under your administration/Gear icon drop down at the top right area on your course main page.
Editing Activities and Resources
This can be done from the course main page when editing is turned on or by clicking on the activity and using the Gear icon at the top right in the activity or resource page.
You can no longer put blocks on the left side of your course and are restricted to only the right side. With Boost being more mobile friendly, when you make the screen about the size of an iPad, smaller than 3/4th size, of the computer screen. your blocks will move from the right side to the bottom of the page. This makes more room for course content to show on smaller screen sizes.
Adding a block: Turn editing on. Scroll to the bottom of your navigation menu and there will be an option to Add a block.
Note: Students will see their Moodle course in the same theme the teacher does. If they are having trouble navigating their course inform them of the changes to the administration block and navigation menu.
